All-San Diego Section teams for fall high school sports (2024)

Selected by a panel of media, coaches and advisers under the auspices of the San Diego Sports Association:

FOOTBALL

Offensive Player of the Year:

Shawn Poma, Cathedral Catholic

The best player on the best team, Poma rushed 138 times for 1,413 yards and 17 TDs with 188 yards on 7 receptions and a pair of scores. With a forfeit and a game called because of lightning, Poma played in just 10 games. He also saw limited action in the second half of four games. He had a season-high 203 yards rushing against Helix, 188 against Carlsbad in the playoffs and 178 against Torrey Pines in the San Diego Section Open Division championship game.

Defensive Player of the Year:

Michael Shawcroft, Helix

A large and agile linebacker, Shawcroft has committed to play next season at San Diego State. He averaged nearly 10 tackles a game over the course of the season and had six solo tackles in the section Division I championship game against St. Augustine. He also played tight end, catching seven passes for 128 yards and a TD.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Player of the Year:

Emily Fitzner, Torrey Pines

Committed to Indiana, the 6-foot senior setter/opposite led Torrey Pines to the San Diego Section Open Division championship. The Falcons finished the year 33-4, ranked No. 3 in California and No. 10 in the nation. Fitzner had 623 assists, 255 kills and 150 digs.

GIRLS GOLF

Player of the Year:

Brianna Navarrosa, Mater Dei Catholic

A junior, Navarrosa shot a 7-under-par 137 at Admiral Baker South to win the San Diego Section individual championship by six strokes. It was her second title in three years. She shot a 4-under 69 at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena, placing second by a shot as the team took the SoCal Regional title. At the state championship at the Victoria Club in Riverside, she shot a 4-under 68 to win the individual title by two shots. Navarrosa has committed to USC.

Jacob Stanford, La Costa Canyon

Stanford, a senior, won the San Diego Section Division II championship, covering the 2.96-mile Balboa Park course in 15:06.0, just one second off the best time of the day. The senior went on to place fifth in the state in Division II, running 15:11.17 at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Runner of the Year:

Kristin Fahy, La Costa Canyon

Stanford bound, Fahy capped a sensational prep career by winning the state Division II championship, covering the 3.1-mile Woodward Park course in Fresno in 17:22.6. She won by 50 seconds and had the second-fastest time of the day. Earlier, she won the San Diego Section Division II title, running 16:57.5 over the 2.96-mile Balboa Park course. She won by nearly a minute and had the best time of the day by nearly 20 seconds.

A freshman, Codd passed up a chance to play in the Sugar Bowl Classic in New Orleans to compete for the San Diego Section individual title. The gamble paid off for the Avocado West League champion as she beat teammate Irene Huang 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-4) at the Balboa Tennis Club.

The goalie had 17 saves in an 11-7 San Diego Section Open Division championship-game win over Bishop’s to cap his senior season. He was also named MVP of the America’s Finest City Tournament | recording nine saves in a title-game win over Manhattan Beach Mira Costa.

FIELD HOCKEY

Player of the Year:

Megan Connors, Scripps Ranch

The Cal-bound senior finished the season with 44 goals and 19 assists, leading the Falcons to a 25-2 record and the San Diego Section Open Division championship. In addition, on the morning Scripps Ranch beat San Pasqual for the field hockey title, Connors placed ninth in the section Division II cross country finals, covering the 2.96-mile Morley Field course in 18:48.2.

The home plate gate will open at 5 p.m. Admission to the event, sponsored by the San Diego Sports Association, is free.
