MANKATO — Minnesota State University has named a new vice president for student success and engagement.

MSU names vice president for student success, engagement (5)

Travis Thul’s duties are effective July 31.

He succeeds Lynn Akey, who served as MSU’s vice president for student success, analytics and integrated planning from 2019 until her appointment as chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside earlier this year. Brenda Flannery has been serving as interim vice president for student success and engagement.

Thul will be responsible for providing leadership and direction for a student-oriented culture that ensures access, sustains educational excellence, fosters student development and supports student achievement and success, according to an MSU news release.

In his current role within the University of Minnesota’s Technological Leadership Institute, he oversees the institute’s graduate programs, several other programs and facility operations.

Thul also is as a reserve commander in the U.S. Coast Guard.

He served as a White House Fellow and was appointed to serve as vice president for transformational exports at the Export-Import Bank of the United States.

Thul’s previous academic positions include dean of technology, trades, business and transportation for Minnesota State College Southeast in Winona. He holds a graduate certificate from the Joint Forces Staff College at National Defense University in Washington, D.C., and is a licensed professional engineer.
