Bailey Anne is the First Trans Woman to Win Miss Maryland USA (2024)

There’s always something new at D.C.’s Capital Pride Parade. The route might get tweaked. Some contingent goes particularly over the top, or there might be a surprise protest.

This year, however, one new cut in the Capital Pride carat was Miss Maryland USA, Bailey Anne.

Not only is she just a few weeks into the title, but this year marked her very first visit to the Capital Pride celebration.

“I have not felt comfortable in my own skin,” says Anne, who joined the DC News Now contingent. “To have the support of our community, for them to make space for me, that’s something I don’t take lightly.”

Anne is referring not only to the DC News Now team – particularly news anchor Cory James – but to the LGBTQ community as whole, explaining that until recently she’s been a relatively quiet military spouse, living in Maryland.

She might stand out slightly as a first-generation American, having emigrated from Cambodia when she was a child. She’s definitely receiving added attention, however, as the first Transgender woman to have won the Miss Maryland USA title.

Over the course of the pageant’s evolution, a few changes made it possible for Anne, 31, to even enter, much less win. Today, trans women are welcome to enter the pageant, as are married women, and women of any age.

“I still feel like it hasn’t sunk it yet,” Anne told Metro Weekly of her June 1 win. “I’m still on Cloud 9. I’ve dreamed of this for so long.”

Nevertheless, Anne will have to come down from that cloud and land on a stage in Los Angeles on August 4 for the next stage of her pageantry — competing for the Miss USA crown.

Regardless of the results in L.A., Anne says she’ll be busy supporting the USO, as well as trying to inspire young people.

“I hope to represent Maryland as a community who embrace one another,” she says of her title. “Pride, for me, has to be all year round. There are children out there who may not feel safe to come out. I hope we can spread a message of kindness and compassion. I am a person of faith, and I believe God gave us hearts to feel compassion.”

Ruby Corado is set to plead guilty to a reduced charge of federal wire fraud after the government accused her of diverting $150,000 in pandemic relief funds to her personal bank accounts.

On May 31, the 53-year-old Corado was charged in a new 11-page "criminal information" with one count of wire fraud related to offenses alleged in an earlier six-count complaint that led to her arrest in March.

The new information includes a criminal forfeiture requiring Corado to surrender all proceeds traceable to the offense.

A "criminal information" is a type of charging document that can be used in felony cases only when a defendant has waived the right to indictment. It typically implies that the defendant has entered a plea deal with prosecutors and is slated to plead guilty. However, any plea or agreement ultimately must be approved by a judge.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport rejected a challenge from Lia Thomas seeking to overturn World Aquatics' ban on transgender athletes.

By John Riley on June 19, 2024@JRileyMW

Lia Thomas, the former University of Pennsylvania swimmer who became the first transgender woman to win an NCAA title, has lost her challenge to overturn a policy banning transgender female athletes from competing as women in elite competitions.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport dismissed Thomas's request for arbitration with World Aquatics, the governing body in swimming and diving events, effectively dashing any hope she had of competing in the Olympics or elite global competitions, reports The New York Times.

The Lausanne, Switzerland-based international body, established to settle disputes related to elite sporting competitions, ruled that Thomas did not have standing to bring the case because she was not a member of its member federation -- USA Swimming -- prior to bringing her challenge.

A Minnesota transgender teen was attacked by a fellow student for using a restroom matching her assigned sex at birth.

By John Riley on June 13, 2024@JRileyMW

On May 30, Cobalt Sovereign, a student at Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, entered the boys' bathroom and used one of the stalls. But another student looked over the stall and began harassing her, calling her anti-LGBTQ slurs while hurling insults at her.

Sovereign left the restroom, only to be trailed down the hall by the student and two others.

She got up the coverage to confront them, but when she turned to verbally confront her harasser, he punched her in the mouth.

"He had no reason to have anything against me," the 17-year-old told Minneapolis NBC affiliate KARE. "I've never talked to him, never done anything negative to him. And I was insulted and then eventually hit in the jaw.
